BASIC PURPOSES OF THE FIRE DOORS
The doors resistant to fire and flame can withstand exposure to fire, flame, smoke and other fire related hazards for a
specified period of time and may slow fire spread to the immediate vicinity, as well as surrounding areas and adjoining
premises that may be threatened by the fire. Being resistant to fire, these doors provide opportunities to safely
evacuate people and properties and also keep free, unobstructed access for fire fighters to extinguish the fire or to
localize the ignition sources. In accordance with the statistical data, in the event of fire the absence of the exits,
evacuation and escape routes, means of egress which are kept clear of obstruction or the absence of opportunities
to leave premises on time are the principal factors behind the fire casualties.
SELECTION OF THE INTUMESCENT SEAL FOR FIRE DOORS
The fire resistance capacity (fire rating) is the principal technical parameter of the fire door. The doors are “rated” by
time (in minutes or hours). Such a rate is meant a time period within which the door with fire resistant core can
withstand exposure to the extremely high temperature and prevent spreading of fire and smoke into the premises
where people can be. Depending on the types of the core and characteristic of materials used in manufacturing of
the fire doors, they - by the fire resistance capacity - are rated as follows:
I rate, the fire door must withstand exposure to extremely high temperature up to 1 hour
II rate, destruction of the separate construction elements of the fire door with this rate is allowed after 30 minutes
of continuous exposure to a fire
III rate, the door with this rate can withstand exposure to a fire minimum 15 minutes
In the event of a serious fire, fire doors are one of the most important components in ensuring safe exit, containing
the fire and saving lives. But they can be rendered useless by not using the correct components including intumescent
strip. Gaps around the four sides of a fire door leaf are essential it is the only way the door can open and close. But
these gaps create a point of weakness, where fire can take hold and destroy the door, and lethal smoke can pass
through.
RESSA intumescent strip works by sealing around the edges and gaps of a fire door in the event of a fire. It is
stalled in the fire door and fire safe. When fire happens, it will expand into 7to30 times than its original volume to
seal the gap between the frame and door to avoid the smoke and fire spreading to the safe room. There are no
smoke and fire leak during 30min/60min/90min/120min/180minto supply human enough time escaping from the
fire. RESSA intumescent seal different grades are suitable for the I rate,II rate and III rate fire doors separately.
